The Economics Society are holding a bar crawl tonight - and yes - you've guessed it - the t shirts are made by Fruit of the Loom -

Can someone get their act together on implementing Guild policy please?

  1. It’s a shame that they used fruit of the loom however they are a student group just it’s a simple mistake. They probably had no idea that Fruit of the loom were boycotted as far as I’m concerned I don’t really care; it’s up to them what they buy.

I as far as I’m concerned working on rigidly enforcing guild council mandates on student groups is far less important than getting them implemented within the guild itself.

  2. if they are a society in the guild shouldn't they be sending someone to each guild council, if they did this then wouldn't each society know what's going on?

  3. Ed you pushed this motion through - and now you say you don't really care.

Would you oppose a motion to overturn the ban?

  5. I’m was behind the motion 100%, however it is stretch to say that I pushed it through I didn’t second it or speak on it.

What really matters is that orders from the large organizations like the guild of students and the university don’t happen i.e. the fresher’s week T shirts, Staff uniforms.

If the boycott is going to be a success its needs to be popular on a grass roots level. This won’t be achieved from the top down.

I’m certainly not going to support any measures to better enforce the towing of guild political line by societies. Is that what you want?

  6. Please don’t cite me again without first reading. That article encourages the better implementation on guild middle management not student groups.

  7. All the groups should have a rep at Guild Council and should have voted on the motion as it really affects them, especially as they are so price sensitive. That rep should have communicated back to their group. The basement have emailed about it and at the meeting last week it was brought up. Not many groups seems to know about it still though.

Should the motion be changed to the Guild buying bulk is boycotted but groups are allowed to use them?

What's the punishment for groups that do use them?

  8. I have no idea, what it is I don’t think there is one. I have never seen a boycott motion been put into practice on students groups like this one, I think the answer is there is no mechanisms in place. Most likely any attempt to seriously enforce it with punishments would just result in the motion becoming resented ( a being overturned in time).

“Should the motion be changed to the Guild buying bulk is boycotted but groups are allowed to use them?”

That sounds like a plan to me, The guild should lead by example, how about also in addition to that the VPSAD will communicate to student groups at student groups committee why the guild is boycotting fruit of the loom and encourage them to do likewise.

I’m happy to meet up and chat about this.

The motion deadline for next GC is this Thursday send me a e-mail to e.bauer@guild.bham.ac.uk if you’re interested.
