Naval Gazing

EEO Ed Bauer has hit out against new President Fabian Neuner before the new term has even started. Fierce arguments and disagreements about the roles of Officers within the organisation have been ongoing on blogs and everyone's favourite; Twitter.

Whilst Unofficial Guild is fully aware of the need for streamlining the structure of the Guild, we also believe that too much naval gazing leaves little time for true representation.

Either have a full blown, accessible discussion in TERM TIME about the merits of the trustee board and the leadership styles of officers; OR, more preferably sort any internal officer bickering out internally and not in public.

It may be a wacky suggestion but perhaps spend some time instead planning how to present the Guild to over 5000 new members in less than two weeks before they all slump into the unengaged majority category.

  1. LoL I don't think fierce is the right word.

The debate about trustee only started with me asking a trustee for further details about the 09/10 trustee goals and what he thought about them. I wouldn't say that was hitting out against Fabian. although apparently you would.

If the guild wants to engage more students in its politics then it should encourage all debate. Rather than the suffocating silencing of debate you seem to advocating. It makes me glad Fabian is president rather than some of mad authoritarians that the guild has previously had. who have driven hundreds of activists away because the didn't have the right views.

  2. I have to say i think the debate is very constructive and an important part of the democratic process. Because of the nature of blogging all the discussion is available for people to read at a later date. I'm glad that Ed and Fab have been having this debate in a public forum where students can engage with them.

I also don't think the 20 minutes it takes to post is a waste of their time as it is all part of keeping us informed.

  3. Discussion is a fundamental part of democracy!

Why wait until term time if there is room for discussion now and then make the discussion even more inclusive once the students are back.

Also, I find it very sad that I am criticized for engaging with students on a Saturday and Sunday. I have been working/blogging/tweeting yesterday and today and surely that should not be a basis to attack me on?

  4. We must discuss these things as often as we can, and if this means that things are clearer before the term starts then surely that's positive?

Interesting point about Freshers though, as it does seem the hardest thing in the world to tell 4000 freshers that the Guild is a place for them to campaign and make a difference from, not just a bar (admittedly soon to be a new one!) and a subway.
